NCCT Phlebotomy

In order to become a trained professional in the field of phlebotomy there you have the opportunity to take a certification test from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Some may feel that this testing process offered by the NCCT may be more advanced than other testing processes. According to some in the field including the NCCT, many human resource managers in the health care field will require that prospective job candidates have obtained a NCCT certificate in order to be seriously considered for employment with that facility.  One of the unique aspects of the NCCT test is that unlike some of the standardized tests, the informational data which will appear on the certification tests actually originates from medical institutions, government agencies and even other medical programs and offices.

What Is It?

The NCCT could be considered one of the premier independent certification groups in America and since its inception in 1989, over 240,000 students have tested in a number of areas including phlebotomy technician. Some of the areas where NCCT has conducted field competency testing, include, patient care technicians, surgery technician, medical assistant and ECG technician. NCCT has similar qualification requirements as do other testing organizations, including allowing graduates of approved phlebotomy certificate or diploma programs to sit for the NCCT certification test. The organization believes that its testing process better prepares the test candidate for a job based, upon the validation of the student’s demonstrated test competency in the area of testable skills, knowledge and abilities.

How Do You Qualify?

The educational requirements for qualification are a little more specific in that besides requiring that a test candidate possess a high school diploma or a GED certificate, the type of phlebotomy courses taken by the student must have been approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).  If a student took courses from an institution that had US Department of Education accreditation then the NCCT would also allow those courses to satisfy their approved course requirement. If you did not take a course but you have medically related work experience that is deemed acceptable by the NCCT, then you would be granted a seat to take the certification test.  However, the NCCT will not necessarily automatically approve the previous work experience unless it had covered a certain amount of time. If you excel in the area of verbal skills and you have acquired certain mathematical performance abilities, the NCCT will consider that toward allowing you to take the accreditation test.

Post Test Future

Once you have successfully passed the NCCT certifications testing you still are not done with improving your skills and abilities in the area of phlebotomy.  As a matter of fact, the NCTT mandates that if you have successfully completed the certification you have to return for continuing education in your testing area or field of study.  The organization believes that this requirement gives a professional phlebotomist with NCCT accreditation, an advantage over others who are seeking jobs or career advancement.
